Why Is Soil pH Testing Important?
A lawn cannot thrive without the necessary nutrients and water, pH determines how soil absorbs nutrients and water. This is why the pH of soil is important to measure. When your soil is moderately to extremely acidic, the fertilizer in your soil is wasted. Let’s break it down for you.
4.5 pH – Extremely Acidic | 71% of Fertilizer is Wasted |
5.0 pH – Highly Acidic | 54% of Fertilizer is Wasted |
5.5 pH – Strongly Acidic | 33% of Fertilizer is Wasted |
6.0 pH – Moderately Acidic | 20% of Fertilizer is Wasted |
6.5 – 7.0 pH – Ideal Lawn pH | 0% of Fertilizer is Wasted |
Here’s how to take a soil sample:
- Be sure the tools you are using are clean – Ensures accurate test results
- Dig 5 holes in the area of the lawn you wish to test – Make holes 4” to 6” deep
- All samples go into the same bucket for this test
- Mix the soil in the bucket thoroughly, remove any roots, stones & other debris
- Collect approximately a quart of moist but not wet soil in a plastic or glass container and bring it back for testing (remove rocks and roots from sample) – Please do not use metal containers
Once results are in, we recommend
