How to Care for Primroses
Primroses are great for adding a splash of spring color to tabletops and windows during the winter months.
Our greenhouses are full of color with these beauties. Here are some tips for keeping your primrose healthy indoors.
Light
A cool bright location is the ideal spot for the primrose indoors, 55 degrees to 60 degrees F with some direct sun.
Fertilizer
Use an all purpose or bloom boosting plant food every 2 weeks while in bloom.
Water
Keep soil moist. Do not water the flowers or they may become spotted or discolored. They may be watered from the bottom, but only what they absorb in the 15 to 20 minutes. Do not allow plant to constantly stand in water.
Planting Your Primrose Outside
Should you want to plant your primrose outside, wait until the temperature stays 50 degrees and above.
These flowers prefer morning sun or filtered afternoon sun. If a heavy frost occurs they should be protected if newly planted. If not, they may sustain leaf and / or flower burn but the plant should survive.
When temperatures become too hot (late spring / early summer) they discontinue to blooming until temperatures cool off in the fall. They usually return each year depending on winter conditions and planting location. A protected area near the foundation of the house that receives half day sun is a good choice.
